What About me!

Personally I enjoy working with such a simple but efficient system. You can see part of my setup in the image below. I also have a HP Laserjet 5M (JetDirect card) and another RiscPC (StrongArm - overclocked with heat sink and fan) networked in another part of the house. It means that both my wife and I can work at the same time.

What's this!? I hear you ask. Yes! It's an IBM compatible (a Compaq Deskpro bought at auction for $275) because my digital camera needs it. I have a Sony DSC F717 digital camera using memory sticks. There is no direct way to transfer the images to a RiscOS machine. Solution= second hand machine, optical mouse with inbuilt memory stick reader and network to the Risc OS machines.
Wanted to burn CD's to transmit/archive images. Told IDE too slow on RiscPC. Buy USB Iomega Predator portable CD burner - refurbished from US at under half Aust price. Also picked up a Sony DPP-SV55 dye sublimation printer for 6"x4" photo quality hard copies of selected images. (this printer will plug into your TV and you can select which ones to print after looking on screen)
Wanted larger size prints. Take the memory stick to the camera shop. AU$14 an A4 sheet. Is there a cheaper way? How about an A4 colour printer. But the wife wants a scanner for images to include in her current book. A copier would be handy also.

MFP - could this be the answer? It is amazing how the prices of devices had crashed in the past few years. My first colour printer cost me AU$1400 for mediocre quality. Now my MFP (Epson CX5100) at AU$550 gives:
  • very close to photo quality images on photo quality paper
  • copies very well in colour or B/W
  • scans to a high resolution in colour or B/W
  • can transmit faxes via the computer (other models have fax machine built in)
  • some models can also include memory card slots for the digital camera standards

But these USB devices won't run on older RISCOS because of a lack of drivers. However the RISCOS 5 version may. With the inclusion of some Linux based PCI and USB device drivers these MFP's may work. They are reported to work as well under Linux as they do under Windoze. The only sacrifice would be the software bundled with the machine. They do the job but are crude and cumbersome compared to RISC OS software and features. No directory of images or !Thump to select, drag and drop where you want the image. The software takes over the desktop and wants to compile its own directory of images replicating what already exists so you have to search through the folders for one at a time.

What do I do with the machines and peripherals?

  • take digital photos of local events, school activities, ceromonies and funerals (over 7000 images in past year and a half)
  • convert images into smaller versions then make them into a web page. A set of images has Originals, Reduced and Webpages. The Originals are 1.5meg jpegs and can produce photographic quality images to A4 size. Haven't tried larger than that.
  • burn CD's for families (of funerals), community groups, the Denmark Historical Society
  • write (sometimes - when I feel right) books. Currently I have one on the contribution of the tramway/railway lines to the district, another on another section of my family history and one on my parents life post war as told by documents they kept. All are at various stages.
  • maintain web sites for the community, visitors and groups www.denmarkwa.com.au - Visitor Info - www.denmarkwa.info - Community Info - denmarkwa.biz - Information on Businesses are my domains.
  • Also maintained Denmark Music Festival for the Denmark Music Foundation until a winery sponsored the concert.
  • take photos of children who stay in our cottages and print out mementoes for them to take home
  • keep a pictorial record of the life of my first grandchild, Jacinta Angelique who was only a baby for a short time.

She is an engaging angel who entrances and captivates people.

  • provide an island of sanity and a refuge from a bureaucracy
  • maintain financial records for our Farm and the Farm Cottages
  • transfer to digital form copies of the extensive collection of photographs of the McGuinness family. These were mostly used in 'From the Emerald Isle to the Sunburnt Land' my family history. Copy and distribute the CD's to protect and hopefully preserve them for the future.
  • keep up to date with the RISC OS scene by checking out the website
  • respond to email enquiries about the cottages
  • read the daily emails from Archive-on-Line
  • design and produce brochures for the business
