For those of you who have never driven across the Nullabor picture this:
From Penong (in SA) to Norseman (in WA) it is over 1200km. This is the distance between towns when crossing on the Eyre Highway. In between these towns are ten roadhouses at various distances. Travelling this road one needs to take the range of their vehicle between tanks very carefully into consideration. In some cases the next roadhouse is less than eighty kms while others are two hundred kms apart.
Realistically you can only expect help from the RAC patrols at Noresman and Eucla (at the border) and the RAA at Ceduna. Anywhere else and you are pretty much on your own.
Sitting at Mundrabilla meant I had to find my own amusements. Watching the crows was one. They, along with other birds, have worked out that incoming vehicles are 'fast food'. They pick the dead insects off the front of the vehicles.
Balancing on the aerial while picking off splattered bugs
The crows even fly up under the vehicles and pick at the radiator.
With news that the belt was on its way and that it was to be delivered tomorrow I took a room for the night. This at least enabled me to have a shower and a bed. I'd be refreshed in the morning, ready to install the belt and resume my journey.
